Episode 3.
Maslow's Hierarchy part 2
Question:
What DOES make people happy?
Key Points:
- Recap of last week. See Maslow's Hierarchy part 1 for more details. The same pictures are below
- The third layer of needs is Love and Belonging: friendship, family, and intimacy
- We in America have a tendency to spend a lot of time with our family, but we do not spend enough time with friends
- We have a need to feel like we fit in and being around people that make us feel like we fit in with them is how we get social belonging
- The fourth layer of needs is Esteem: recognition, status, importance, and respect from others
- When we give something away to others, it makes us happy, likely because it improves our self-esteem and sometimes our esteem by others also
- What we, as Americans most need to work on are Love and Belonging and Esteem
- The fifth layer of needs is Self-Actualization: "What a man can be, he must be"
- Self-Actualization means fulfilling one's destiny and "being all that you can be"
