Episode 18.
Personality Types: Quadrant Theory
Question:
Why can't everyone be happy?
Key Points:
- We previously have talked about Maslow's Heirarchy
- Four weeks ago, we talked about the Meyer's Briggs Personality Index (MBTI). Today we reviewed that information first.
- MBTI has 16 personality types (2x2x2x2). For most people, 4 types is a lot easier to remember and talk about.
- There are a lot of different personality types that are out there that all have four types. They are all different, but they're all pretty similar
- I lump all of these together and call them "Quadrant Theory"
- We use numbers (1, 2, 3, and 4) for the four types
- Type 1s are all about having fun
- Don't like structure
- Change is good, in and of itself
- Surprises are good
- To get type 1s to do something, convince them it will be fun
- Type 2s are all about love and belonging
- Want other people to be happy
- Care about relationships
- To get type 2s to do something, convince them that other people want them to do it or that it will be good for their relationships
- Type 3s are all about getting stuff done
- Type 3s often move into leadership roles, if they understand that more can be gotten done with other people's help, rather than getting it done on their own
- Want to achieve their goals
- To get type 3s to do something, convince them that it will help them achieve their goals
- Type 4s are all about doing what's right
- Like order and structure
- Expect things to be done well and the "right" way
- Often have strong S and J in the Meyer's Briggs
- To get a 4 to do something, convince them that it is the right thing to do
- The difference between a 3 and a 4 is motivation. A lot of times they end up looking similar in their actions
- Everybody has all 4 types in them, it's a question of how much of each people have
- We talk about people's personality types by naming their primary and secondary (e.g. I am a 3-1)
- There is a whole quadrant theory called Keirsey that is based around the MBTI
- Keirsey type 1s are called Artisans
- Keirsey type 2s are called Idealists
- Keirsey type 3s are called Rationals
- Keirsey type 4s are called Guardians
- The Keirsey types are not split evenly, so their split of people is a little bit different than some other quadrant theories because of that
- Gary Smalley has a quadrant theory as well which uses animals
- Type 1s are Otters
- Type 2s are Golden Retrievers
- Type 3s are Lions
- Type 4s are Beavers
- Everything you do impacts different people differently, so that's why not everyone can be happy
- Now I try to do things that an individual person would want rather than what someone in general would want
